Microsoft to reveal a New Generation, May 21

Mark your calendars, Microsoft is getting ready for something big. After years of speculation and rumours, the announcement of the next Xbox console is less than a month away, with May 21st revealed as the hallowed date.

Whether it will be the Xbox 720, the Xbox Infinite, the neXtbox or simply the Xbox, Don Mattrick, President of Microsoft‘s interactive entertainment division is going to take the wraps off in an event held in Redmond, Washington, at 1pm PST (What’s that in my timezone?).

Of course, the festivities will be streamed live just about everywhere, so if you didn’t receive a sought-after invitation, you won’t miss out.

Mark your calendars!

Set your alarms!

Yes, this is an announcement of an announcement, and if we want to get technical, Microsoft still has not actively confirmed that it will be the one we’re all waiting for, but there are plenty of hints. Major Nelson refers openly to an #XboxReveal, and the event is titled, “A New Generation Revealed”.

On that day, we’ll share our vision for Xbox, and give you a real taste of the future. Then, 19-days later at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles, we’ll continue the conversation and showcase our full lineup of blockbuster games.

Believe it or not, this is the first official acknowledgement by Microsoft that it is working on a new gaming console. Despite all that, we’ve been hearing rumours about codename Durango for more than a year, with all sorts of stories circulating about just what it will entail.

All eyes will be on Washington on May 21st to see if the two most persistent rumours have any truth to them: Will the new console require an always-online internet connection? Will it restrict the sale of used games?

…hopefully, all will be revealed in just 25 days.
