EA sale celebrates: 40 million gamers use Origin

Despite the less-than-great news about EA‘s Origin service yesterday, the company is today proudly announcing that more than 40 million members have signed up to the service – a jump of 1,000,000 gamers since the last figures were announced in January.

It’s been a good year for Origin, seeing 2 million new registrations in the January 2013 holiday period. The service also now has a new concurrent user record: 1.3 million gamers were online at the same time, following the tumultuous launch of SimCity earlier this month.

Origin's Player Appreciation Sale

Origin’s Player Appreciation Sale

To celebrate, EA is holding a Player Appreciation Sale on Origin for one week only, with up to 50% 70% off of selected titles (promotional material says 50%, but in several regions, we’re seeing Battlefield 3 selling for $9.99 rather than $49.99 – way less than half price!).

Games on sale are a combination of big name EA releases (like Need for Speed Most Wanted, Crysis 3, The Sims 3, Fifa 13), but also a handful from Ubisoft, including Far Cry 3 and Assassin’s Creed III.

While this is all a bit exciting, please remember that yesterday it was uncovered that the Origin software could be exploited to allow remote access to your PC.
