Naughty Dog and Sony have disappointed gamers around the world with the revelation that The Last of Us will miss its May 7th release date. Insted, fans will have to wait an extra six weeks to find out more about the “ambitious project” that is the adventures of Joel and Ellie.

Unfortunately, it’s the “ambitious” nature of the project that’s caused the delay, with Naughty Dog simply realising it won’t be able to finish in time for the May deadline.
Neil Druckmann is Creative Director at Naughty Dog, and he broke the news:
As we entered the final phase of development for The Last of Us, we came to realize just how massive Joel and Ellie’s journey is. But instead of cutting corners or compromising our vision, we came to the tough decision that the game deserved a few extra weeks to ensure every detail of The Last of Us was up to Naughty Dog’s internal high standards.
Blame Naughty Dog completely for this one. The studio’s set itself a remarkably high quality bar for its games – and is working hard to ensure that The Last of Us raises that bar even further. It’s promising brand new tech, a new universe and cast of characters, and a brand new genre for the developer. On top of all that, it’s “easily” the longest campaign Naughty Dog has worked on.
So, while development is progressing smoothly and there are no major hiccups, it just won’t quite meet the May release. Instead, it’s been bumped to June 14th, which also happens to be the day after E3 2013.
