That noise you can hear is cheering from the very small number of hold-out Halo 2 fans on PC. They have just been told that Microsoft will not turn their multiplayer servers off, despite recent announcements to the contrary.
The good news comes via David Ellis, designer at 343 Industries:
Halo 2 PC support extended through June 2013 while we investigate further support options. Now go get those achievements.
Previously, we’d been told that the last few Halo 2 PC multiplayer servers would be turned off on Friday, February 15th, due to a pretty significant lack of interest. Reports from within 343 Industries reveal player activity peaked “consistently at approximately 20 players or less”.
In comparison, the flagship Xbox multiplayer servers for Halo 2 were shut down in April 2010.
Gamers around the world (approximately 20 of them) are hoping that 343‘s “further support options” include an open dedicated server release, but, um… that seems unlikely.
