Nintendo Direct reveals big Wii U games incoming

Nintendo is lining up a pretty hefty 2013, with a new 3D Mario title, a new Mario Kart, and two new Zelda games heading to Wii U. There’s also a new Yoshi game on the horizon, as well as a couple of very interesting-sounding original IPs.

But first, the big guns. Mario Kart Wii U is the sort of obvious release that we’re still pretty excited about, even though we know it’ll be close enough to the same game on a new platform. The introduction of the Wii U GamePad could open up a whole new array of multiplayer elements, while the extra processing power and HD means it’s going to look amazing.

The new 3D Mario game is in development by the same team who put together the Super Mario Galaxy titles for Wii, as well as Super Mario 3D Land for 3DS. No surprises, punters are predicting the new one will be something like Mario Galaxy 3.

Zelda is set to make an appearance in an HD port of the GameCube classic The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, but a new, unnamed game in the franchise is set to bring Link and his friends “back to basics”.

The Kirby’s Epic Yarn team are apparently working on a new game starring Yoshi, “set in a fanciful world of yarn and textiles”.

…but all eyes are on third-party titles. Nintendo is officially collaborating with Atlus to create a Shin Megami Tensei vs Fire Emblem cross-over, while Monolith Soft is working on a mysterious new untitled project. Development on Bayonetta 2 continues, with Platinum Games not quite in a position to talk about it yet, but trust us – it’s looking pretty sweet.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata apologised for “the lack of new titles in January and February”, but promises that there will be a “steady stream” of games once the floodgates open in March.
