Tomb Raider gets multiplayer from Eidos Montreal

Well now, it’s official: Tomb Raider will indeed feature a multiplayer component when it hits shelves in March. The news is already dividing the gaming community, with many fans up in arms over the ‘pollution’ of their beloved single-player exclusive experience. However, Crystal Dynamics Community Manager Meagan Marie has some light to shed on the topic.

In a new forum post, Meagan reveals that Lara Croft will be featured on the cover of the U.S. Official Xbox Magazine, and the mag itself contains a bombshell they’ve been keeping under wraps for years.

Very exciting news to (finally) confirm to you guys!

Tomb Raider will include a multiplayer offering thanks to the hard work of our sister-studio, the hugely talented Eidos Montreal. The team at Eidos Montreal has been working away at the multiplayer while we focused everything on the single-player offering.

Traditionally a solitary affair, this is not Lara’s first foray into multiplayer: The downloadable Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light was a top-down co-op event, but is not considered part of the “core” Tomb Raider series.

Short version: Single-player is still 100% standalone and developed at Crystal Dynamics, quite happily untainted by any multiplayer elements. On the other side of the coin, Eidos Montreal is the team behind Deus Ex: Human Revolution, with developers believed to be now splitting their time between Tomb Raider and the eagerly-anticipated Thief 4.

More details to come with the magazine – Tomb Raider is set to launch in early March for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.
