Remember that Minecraft documentary we’ve been promised for a while now? Even though the news has been pretty quiet recently, 2 Player Productions has been working frantically on Minecraft: The Story of Mojang, and the fruits of the studio’s labour are about to come to fruition. Mark the date: Saturday 22nd December.
The project was Kickstarted earlier ths year, originally designed as just a 20 minute short. That idea was quickly scrapped when the cinematic crew realised just what they were working with. Adjusting the plan a little, the short film was expanded into a feature-length documentary about Minecraft developer Mojang‘s first year, created as “a powerful statement about what it means to create, release, and play games in the twenty-first century”.
For the first time, viewers will be given an in-depth look at both the triumphs and the challenges faced by a studio during their first year in existence. We will analyze the unprecedented success of Minecraft, gain insight into its impact from journalists and industry professionals, and meet the fans whose lives have been changed by the game.
So. What’s so special about December 22nd? That’s when we’ll finally get a glimpse of the project, as it makes a grand, international debut via XBOX Live. If you’re a Gold member, congratulations! It’s free! (As long as you’re a current subscriber, in the U.S., U.K., France, Germany, Australia or New Zealand – check your dashboard for local viewing times).
…if you’re not a Gold member, don’t have an Xbox, or would prefer to watch in other ways, Minecraft: The Story of Mojang will be available on DVD and via direct download one day later – Sunday December 23rd.
