Nexon acquires Ghost in the Shell license

A new adaptation of Ghost in the Shell: STAND ALONE COMPLEX is on the way, thanks to Korean publisher Nexon, who has just inked a deal to develop and publish a game based the popular manga series.

The game itself – identified as a single title, rather than a series – will be based on Ghost in the Shell: STAND ALONE COMPLEX, Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C 2nd GIG and Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society Series. In turn, those are each adapted from the original universe created by Masamune Shirow, first published in 1989.

Seungwoo Choi, Nexon CEO explains:

We are very pleased to have given the opportunity to work with Kodansha in the development of games for the Ghost in the Shell: STAND ALONE COMPLEX franchise, which is highly popular worldwide. We will add NEXON’s wide-ranging experiences and know-how to the original creation in order to develop high quality games to meet the expectations of all its fans.

This will be the second game based on the Ghost in the Shell franchise – an earlier title was released for PlayStation in 1997 by THQ.

In the twenty years since the manga’s first publication, Ghost in the Shell has spawned a number of sequels, adaptations, spin-offs and other products, including three full-length anime feature films. Despite the still largely Japanese fan-following for the franchise, Nexon‘s new game will be created for a “worldwide” audience. No title, date or platform has yet been discussed.
