The Secret World scraps subscription model

Well, it’s official. No more subscriptions for The Secret World, with EA and Funcom today announcing their new campaign: “Pay Once, Play Forever”. Taking the approach that “subscription is optional”, the entire heralded storyline is now available for free – but if you’ve already paid for a subscription, you won’t be missing out.

The Secret World game director Joel Bylos explains that it’s not the end of the world:

With this recent change there is no reason not to join and take part in The Secret World.

Most players end up having a ton of fun once they delve into the myths and legends of The Secret World, and we believe the game has the potential to be even more successful without the subscription entry barrier. It is an ambitious and very exciting move for us.

And so, this: “No complicated rules or restrictions, no complex matrixes telling you what you can and cannot access.”

Now – if you’ve already paid a subscription fee (or forked over for a lifetime sub), you won’t be left out in the cold. Instead, you’ll be automatically entered into a new scheme, which offers all of the game’s free content plus a bunch of perks including fixed IAP discounts.

…if you’re new to the game and want a bit of this perk-y action, it’s a simple matter of buying a membership for $10/€10 per month, cancel any time.

You will still need to buy the game initially though – and Funcom tells us that if you get onto that quickly, before December 31st, you’ll get Issue #5 content free, plus the Initiate Pack, crammed full of strong starter weapons, extra social clothing and a nifty Blood Raven pet.

For more information, you can head to the Secret World website, or spend a bit of time perusing the Subscription Changes FAQ.
