If I’m reading this right, Mafia Wars 2 is currently being fitted for a pair of concrete shoes, as Zynga announces the demise of yet another of its Facebook games. The 3D sequel to the original Mafia Wars will join FishVille and Treasure Isle in closing its doors in the not-so-distant future.
While the original Mafia Wars was ridiculously successful, back in the day, Mafia Wars 2 never really gained traction on the social scene. Gamers who enjoyed the original’s simple, text-based control scheme weren’t convinced by the new, flashy 3D model, with its focus on town-building and other gimmicks. Today, the game has a mere 280,000 monthly users.
An email to players suggests that one of Zynga‘s other franchises may be a more comfortable fit:
Zynga is committed to helping Mafia Wars 2 players find a new place to play. As a thank you for your participation, we would like to offer you a one-time, complimentary bonus package in one of either CastleVille, ChefVille, FarmVille 2, Mafia Wars, or YoVille. You can start the process by clicking the Redeem button in game. Please note that this offer will be valid only until December 30, 2012.
The bad news continues for Zynga – this week it was revealed that the studio’s relationship with Facebook has changed. After two years of receiving “secret perks”, Zynga games are now treated in exactly the same way as everybody else.
