In addition to the news that StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm will be released sometime in 2013, today’s Activision Blizzard investor conference call revealed that Diablo III has sold over 10 million copies, and an expansion is on its way–well, sometime, at least.
President of Blizzard Entertainment, Mike Morhaime, elaborates:
We do have an expansion planned for Diablo, [but] I don’t have any timeline to talk about. I think the most important thing for us always comes down to the quality of the expansion and the gameplay, so that will be a big factor in terms of driving our schedule.
We expect that over the long-term, we will maintain our leadership position as the world’s leading interactive entertainment company and continue to provide strong returns to our shareholders by delivering great games to audiences around the world.
Somebody’s certainly confident, and he has good reason. Activision Blizzard‘s third quarter financial report revealed a net revenue of US$841 million, thanks to the success of Diablo III, World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria and Skylanders. When we also take into account that Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is on the way later this month (which Kotick says they “believe will be one of the most successful launches of any form of entertainment in history”), Activision Blizzard is definitely going strong.
