The first newsbit of today is a disappointing one for eager StarCraft fans: the new expansion StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm will not be released this year.

The news was broken during an Activision-Blizzard third quarter 2012 financial results conference call, where Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime assured investors that the studio was “working hard towards a first half 2013 launch.”

The popular title has gone through a bit of controversy recently, with some professional players feeling that recent changes have contributed to the stagnation of the eSport phenomenon, but Blizzard’s Chris Sigaty, production director on StarCraft II disagrees, arguing that “StarCraft II remains a staple and premier viewing attraction” at a number of popular events, including the upcoming Battle.net World Championship in China, according to Kotaku.

In addition to a large new installment to the single-player StarCraft II campaign, Heart of the Swarm will feature a variety of new units and game mechanics, such as clans, a player leveling/progression system, resumable multiplayer replays and more.
