Borderlands 2 ships over 5 million units

According to Gearbox Software and publisher 2K Games, the award-winning Borderlands 2 has now shipped over 5 million units worldwide, making Borderlands 2 one of the biggest games of the year. That’s a lot of guns. Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox, writes:

Players have embraced Borderlands 2 as their next hobby with over 50 million interactions with Claptrap in the central town of Sanctuary and 12,000 real world years’ worth of time spent shooting and looting their way through Pandora! We can’t wait to show everyone what more we have in store for Borderlands 2.

With a bunch of new DLC including the new Mechromancer character class and Captain Scarlett and her Pirate’s Booty (and a fine booty it is, Scarlett), Gearbox seems pretty happy with the game’s momentum.

In related news, the Borderlands franchise has just seen a new addition in the form of Borderlands Legends, an iOS game spanning both action-RPG and strategy genres aiming to bring the mayhem to the mobile platform. Initial reviews of the game don’t seem crash-hot, however, so unless you’re an absolute die-hard fan perhaps this might be one to give a miss.
