The film adaptation of Need for Speed doesn’t seem to be wasting any time in hurtling towards Hollywood, with DreamWorks Studios today announcing that Breaking Bad actor Aaron Paul will be taking the lead role. Paul will join Act of Valor director Scott Waugh on the project, set for theatrical release in February 2014.
Holly Bario, President of Production at DreamWorks Studios explains:
We are huge fans of Aaron’s and his stellar work on ‘Breaking Bad’. We couldn’t be more excited to have him headline our cast for ‘Need for Speed’.
Patrick Soderlund, Executive Vice President at EA continues:
Need for Speed is one of the most action-packed entertainment experiences you can find. The newest game, ‘Need for Speed Most Wanted’ and the upcoming film take the action to all new heights. Like the game series itself, the cast for the movie needs to be edgy and cool. Aaron Paul is a rising star — a great choice for the film lead.
Paul, a two-time Emmy winner for his breakthrough performance as Jesse Pinkman on Breaking Bad, has also appeared in Smashed, The Last House on the Left, Mission: Impossible III, and Big Love.
The screenplay has already been written by George Gatins, who collaborated with John Gatins on the original story – we’re told it is based on the super-popular Need for Speed franchise, but not on any one particular game.
Expect high-octane, fast-paced film action, drawing inspiration not only from the gaming franchise but also from the classic “car culture” films of the 70s. Hot cars, intense racing, and edge-of-your-seat storytelling: It’s all here.
