SimCity developer opens new Finland office

In a world where it feels like every second studio announcement is a closure or a significant downsizing, it’s great to hear that EA Maxis has expanded its operations, opening a new office in Helsinki, Finland.

This new European team is set to focus on The Sims franchise – specifically developing and producing mobile games. Later, it acknowledges the possibility of expanding into other properties (EA Maxis handles The Sims, SimCity and Spore, among others).

Maxis general manager Lucy Bradshaw explains:

Mobile is a strategic focus for the company and to Maxis as a label. We feel that the talent base in Finland will be a strong complement to our existing mobile expertise based around the world.

The Sims franchise continues to find strong audiences across all platforms and the team we are building in Helsinki will be tasked to maintain our tradition of being some of the most creative game developers on any platform. Welcome to the team.

The new studio will be in good hands – Playfish Global Studios vice president Jami Laes is taking charge of the team. We spoke to Jami at E3 about his work with Facebook game SimCity Social.
