Rez creator takes a break from game production

In an interesting twist, while Q Entertainment co-founder Tetsuya Mizuguchi is in Australia, talking about game development as part of the Game Masters exhibition and FreePlay, his colleague and company director Nobuhiko Shimizu is back in Japan, telling people that, really, he doesn’t do much of that, these days.

Shimizu spoke to Eurogamer while at Tokyo Game Show:

Right now Mizuguchi does not produce the games. He’s now more of a spokesperson – he’s not developing stuff right now.

Mizuguchi is recognised as the mastermind behind some of the most fascinating and innovative games we’ve seen to date, including Rez, Lumines, Space Channel 5 and Every Extend Extra, to name a few.

His prolific output has slowed recently, seeing the producer role handed to James Mielke for Lumines Electronic Symphony, released earlier this year for PlayStation vita. (Mielke has now left Q Entertainment and is working at Q-Games, incidentally.)

Shimizu explained that, since the launch of Child of Eden last year, Mizuguchi has focussed on academic work, while Q Entertainment looks at combining music with card-battle games.
