Black Mesa v1.0 is finally here

We’ve been waiting for Black Mesa for almost as long as we’ve been waiting for Half-Life 3, but the dedicated modding community has won that race, with the release of one of the most anticipated mods of all time (of all time!).

Black Mesa is full conversion mod for Half-Life 2, which tells the story of the original Half-Life with all the added bells and whistles of the Source engine. You can grab Black Mesa v1.0 directly from the Player Attack File Library, right now!

Volunteers have been working on the game for more than eight years, and we’ve been teased with release before. The most recent was in 2009, when Black Mesa very nearly hit shelves before the developers decided they still weren’t quite happy with it.

Three years later, there are still a few bits and pieces left to work on – and the entire Xen section has been put to one side – but the public had waited long enough for Black Mesa, and the mod launched successfully over the weekend, after a ticking timer counted down the days.

By “successfully”, we mean that the 3GB download crippled almost the entire internet for a few days, with gaming websites crashing all over the globe. Never underestimate the power of nearly a decade worth of anticipation.

If you haven’t yet picked up a copy of Black Mesa, you can always grab Black Mesa v1.0 from our file library, or wait a little while longer: Black Mesa is one of the first 10 games to gain Steam Greenlight approval, meaning it’ll show up on Steam in the not-so-distant future.
