PAX Prime over the weekend held a few big announcements, but one which caught our eye relates to Brothers in Arms: Furious 4. We’d seen the game revealed at E3 2011, but hadn’t heard much from developer Gearbox since – and it seems that big changes have been afoot.
Developers apparently got pretty wrapped up in the game, pushing it to see where it would go – and it turned out that it went somewhere completely unexpected, “away from the core” of the Brothers in Arms franchise. While a certain amount of leeway is accepted – and even expected – for some spinoffs and sequels, Furious 4 reportedly kept moving awway, and reached a point where it “needed to be unshackled”, says Pitchford.
I wanted to let everyone know that that game’s no longer going to be a Brothers In Arms game. It’s going to be an all-new IP.
The game we saw at E3 looked stunning (but very different from previous BiA titles). Taking obvious influence from Inglourious Basterds, the film from Quentin Tarantino, gamers were divided in their reactions.
