Vanguard: Saga of Heroes is the latest MMO to jump on the free-to-play transition bandwagon – and you don’t have long to get ready. The PC-based fantasy title will be making the switch on August 14th, 2012 – that’s next week!

Vanguard Community Relations Manager, Zatozia the Torturess, explains that:
Over the past couple of months, we have been working hard to improve the game in order to prepare for the influx of new and returning players. If you have not heard about all the changes, check them out for yourself in game and out of game! In the coming week, you’ll start to notice even more changes as we move toward the official free-to-play launch.
Those changes are expected to include:
A new-look, new-location website, with the official site enjoying a major facelift to go with the brand new vanguardthegame.com URL.
The Vanguard Marketplace, which offers several categories for you to check out: Mounts and Pets, Appearance and Equipment, Services and Housing.
Starting Areas are being revamped, so rolling a new character will see you popping up at Three Rivers Village, Tanvu, Cliffs of Ghelgad, Tursh Village or the Isle of Dawn.
…and if you’re getting sick of in-game class restrictions, you can relax – they’ve been removed, for all races. Finally, you can create that special character that you’ve always dreamed about making.
Even more changes are outlined in the game update notes. Vanguard launched all the way back in 2007, with much of the first year dedicated to bugfixes and gameplay improvements after developer Sigil Games was bought out by Sony.
Sony has been happily running the game since, albeit only on two official servers. After a long hiatus, Vanguard enjoyed a major revamp in August 2011, which brought many lapsed gamers back to Telon – it’s hoped that the Free-to-play manouevre will do the same thing.
