It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about the long-fabled Warcraft film, and now we’re sorry to break the silence with a bit of bad news. I’ll put it to ya straight: Sam Raimi is off the project.
In an interview at Comic-Con, Raimi explains that he was just too busy with his upcoming film, Oz: The Great and Powerful, due out in 2013. Given the way the film industry works, he would have to finish up post-production on Oz before he could think too much about Warcraft (something we first heard about back in 2010), and it doesn’t seem like that plan worked for Blizzard.
Talking to CraveOnline, Raimi offers gamers a little hope:
Actually, they don’t have me directing World of Warcraft anymore because when I took the Oz job, they had to move on to another director. They had to start making it.
So on one hand – no Sam Raimi. That’s bad. On the other – apparently the film is already in production. That’s good! On the third hand – we haven’t actually heard anything from either Blizzard or those oft-reliable Hollywood sources that back up either statement.
Not that we’re arguing with Raimi (we’re fairly certain he knows which projects he’s attached to), but it’s still somewhat intriguing that everybody’s remaining so tight-lipped on this one. With no BlizzCon this year, updates on the Warcraft film are probably still a fair while off.
