Limbo spiritual successor codenamed Project 2

Sometimes, rumours and leaks can spring from the most unexpected places. While ratings boards are a traditional suspect, other government agencies can occasionally let cats out of bags too – as we’ve seen today from Denmark, with revelations surrounding Limbo developer Playdead.

Project 2

Codename: Project 2

The Danish government updated its website to include a list of interactive grant recipients (in Danish) – and among that list was an entry titled simply Project 2. Listed as a 2.5D platformer for PC, Mac, PS3 and Xbox 360, the new game “tells the story of a boy’s struggle against evil forces trying to take over the world through questionable experiments on human bodies”.

The information, linked to Playdead, featured a single piece of concept art. The dark, moody silhouette of a boy is stylistically similar to what we saw in Limbo, but it’s taken a deeper, darker direction.

In August last year, Playdead CEO Dino Patti warned that the followup to Limbo would take more than three years to create. More recently, he’s elaborated on the ideas incorporated in Project 2, describing it as “similar in many ways, but so different”, and – wait for it – “more weird”.

Something to look forward to, then. Playdead refuses to be rushed – we’ll hear more about the codenamed Project 2 when the studio is good and ready, most definitely not before.
