Hailed by many as “The Best Zombie Mod Evar” – in an arena already overcrowded by the undead – DayZ is something a little bit special. It is arguably the closest thing we’ve gotten to a survival zombie MMO, and it’s all been created as a brutal mod for Bohemia Interactive‘s FPS ArmA II.
It’s been floating around for a while, but now we’ve seen a sparkling new cinematic trailer that should go a long way towards getting people off of the fence.
DayZ is a side project from Bohemia Interactive staffer Dean Hall. He thought up the game and built it as a proof of concept, in addition to the work being done on the vanilla game. The mod includes “realistic” zombies complete with custom animations and unique movement patterns, new weapons (including crossbows) and purpose-built vehicles and a custom medical system. Everything plays out on a persistent server – whatever you have on you will be saved until the next time you log in – making DayZ stand out among a sea of same-ol’, same-ol’.
Emphasis has been placed on hunting and survival, rather than simply fraggin’. Scavenge together weapons, food and other resources – if you don’t eat and drink frequently enough, you’lll die. In a unique twist, animals which roam the gameplay area actually serve a purpose – if you’ve got the right tools on-hand, they can be killed and eaten, replenishing energy and extending your life.
A 225 km2 open world post-soviet state and one of the areas hit by a new and presently unknown infection which has wiped out most of the world’s population. You are one of the few who have survived and now you must search this new wasteland in order to fight for your life against what is left of the indigenous population, now infected with the disease.
Today’s video has been created by Tim van Kan, and – rather than being anything in-house from the DayZ team, it’s actually a number of individual YouTube fan videos stitched together to a soundtrack made from tv show The Walking Dead. (The official trailer for the game – subtitled The Survivors – is available in our file library.
If you want to hop into DayZ, you’ll need a couple of things: ArmA II: CO (available via Steam), the DayZ mod files (available via the official website), and a decent set of cojones (either physical or metaphorical, your call).
