Metal Gear Online is the multiplayer side of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. It was launched four years ago on June 12th, 2008, with the intention of running for three years. However, the game proved to be so successful that publisher Konami decided to let it go for a little while longer, extending its run by another 12 months.

…alas, all good things must come to an end – today, on the fourth anniversary of the Metal Gear Online servers being fired up, they will be shut down completely.
…we have regretfully come to a point where players have experienced all that this iteration of Metal Gear Online is able to offer. Therefore, it saddens us to announce that we have decided to end online service with the upcoming fourth anniversary of online service. We would like to apologize to all of the users who are currently enjoying the Online Service for this title, and kindly ask for your understanding.
A public notice from Konami crosses its fingers that the team “will have the opportunity to serve you again in the future” – while offering its deepest thanks for all of the support shown by gamers over the past four years.
Thank you for coming with us on this journey. Your help allowed MGO to grow and mature. We regret that this journey must end, but we sincerly hope that we will have the opportunity to serve you again in the future.
