11 THQ will not host a booth at E3 2012

While most major publishers are getting ready to flaunt their wares at E3 2012 (just one month away!), one company is missing out. THQ has announced that it will not be hosting a booth at this year’s expo.

That doesn’t mean you’ll miss out completely on the handful of games the publisher is working on, however. In an official statement, a THQ spokesperson explains:

We’re not producing a booth, but we will be participating in E3. We will be showing games to the E3 judges at their event coming up, and we’ll be hosting a press and business center at the show for meetings (as well as participating with first party activities).

When we needed to make the decision on the booth (many months ago) we were in a MUCH different place than today. But, we will be there to support our portfolio and the show itself.

This makes sense – the cost of an E3 booth can (reportedly) cost a publisher in excess of US$1m, with all the flashy lights and the big screens and the booth babes. In a year where THQ has laid off hundreds of employees from various studios – and still faces a possible delisting from Nasdaq – many feel it would be inappropriate for the company to spend so much money on the spectacle of a trade show.

So while last year’s expo was purple-tinged in honour of Saints Row: The Third (which also sponsored a bikini carwash in the parking lot), 2012 will see a more toned-down THQ presence. We’re expecting that Darksiders II (recently delayed), the new Saints Row standalone expansion, and the freshly-announced Company of Heroes 2 will get shown off a bit, potentially with a visit from Metro: Last Light.
