Project Diva series ships more than 1mil copies

Music fans around the world were suitably impressed by the appearance of Tupac Shakur onstage at the Coachella music festival on Sunday night – particularly because the musician has been dead for 16 years and was placed onstage thanks to hologram technology.

Miku Hatsune

Miku!

But it’s not the first time that a virtual musical act has taken the stage – Japanese popstar Hatsune Miku performed a number of concerts, holographically, in her home country and even toured to the U.S. last June.

But it’s video games where she got her start – and SEGA reports that she’s been awfully popular over there, too. The company has shipped (not sold) more than 1 million units of the Project Diva series to date in Japan. That includes Project Diva, Project Diva 2nd and Project Diva Extend – all, so far, Japan-only releases.

If you’re a fan and would like to commemorate this milestone, head to this here survey and fill it out (it’s in Japanese, by the way). 390 randomly selected users will win a sparkly gold Hatsune Miku pin, while everybody who answers the questions will receive an exclusive PC desktop wallpaper.

Personally, I think a Western-release of the rhythm game would be better, but still. It’s a start. The survey runs until April 27th.
