Rovio snaps up Unstoppable Gorg developer

It’s been a big week for Rovio Entertainment – firstly, the super-successful launch of Angry Birds Space, followed quickly by the acquisition of developers Futuremark Games Studio.

Creators of PC benchmarking software 3DMark, Futuremark‘s gaming arm published Unstoppable Gorg earlier this year, an interstellar take on tower defence. Since the game’s launch, it seems the developer’s been stretched a little thin, trying to straddle both projects.

Jukka Mäkinen, Futuremark CEO explains:

I am proud to see the potential of our talented games team recognized by Rovio.

Futuremark will now focus on supporting gamers and industry with 3DMark, our professional grade benchmark which, in a new version to be released later this year, will allow unified gaming performance comparison across operating systems and form factors for the first time.

Mikael Hed, CEO at Rovio Entertainment is rather pleased with the deal:

They are an incredibly talented and experienced team, and we are thrilled to have them on board. Rovio’s success is founded on the excellence of our team, and Futuremark Games Studio is going to be a superb addition.

It’s not the first developer acquisition for Rovio, who picked up Kombo Animation Studio last year. Looking at the company’s rapid rise to success, expanding beyond video games to publishing, animation, retail and merchandise, we’re guessing it won’t be the last, either.
