New Neo Geo handheld on sale soon

SNK Playmore is returning to the hardware business, announcing the official return of the Neo Geo console – a new handheld called the Neo Geo X.

The console is an interesting joint project between retro games console specialist Blaze, alongside U.S. distributor Tommo and, of course, SNK Playmore. At launch, it will come with 20 titles built into the handheld, but with the SD card slot we’re hoping there will be more to come. (Some hardware specs for you: 3.5″ LCD screen, SD card slot, A/V output and a set of internal speakers.)

Which games? Here’s the list:

  • Art Of Fighting
  • Baseball Stars
  • Cyber Lip
  • Fatal Fury
  • Fatal Fury Special
  • Football Frenzy
  • King Of The Monsters
  • Last Resort
  • League Bowling
  • Magician Lord
  • Metal Slug
  • Mutation Nation
  • Nam 1975
  • Samurai Shodown
  • Sengoku
  • Super Sidekicks
  • The King Of Fighters’94
  • The Ultimate 11
  • Top Players Golf
  • World Heroes

Jason Cooper from Blaze is more than a little enthusiastic about the project:

The Neo Geo console has always been a personal favorite of mine and I am delighted to be involved with the development of this new handheld console. We hope to re-ignite the excitement many of us felt 21 years ago, in a more affordable manner, to a much wider audience.

…and yes, it really has been 21 years since the Neo Geo AES debuted in 1990 (with an asking price of $650, plus ~$200 per cartridge if you wanted actual games). We’re hoping this new one’s a tad cheaper, but the final price is yet to be confirmed.
