Killzone 3 Multiplayer goes free to play

Like all proud parents, Sony and Guerrilla Games would like you to know just what Killzone 3 has to offer. In order to give everybody an opportunity to try the game out for themselves, they’re making the entire multiplayer mode available for download, absolutely free.

The new free-to-play version, known as Killzone 3 Multiplayer (who’dathunk?), includes three modes from the original game, plus the default Killzone 3 maps and all of the new maps added through DLC.

…and of course, there’s a catch, but it’s not a killer. Proving that the multiplayer release is just a taste, designed to get you hooked, once you’ve ranked up to Sergeant I, you’ll need to fork over $15 if you’d like to advance and unlock the game’s trophies.

While I know you’re already itching to get in on the freebie Killzone 3 action, you may like to hold off until after this weekend. Organised as a benefit for fans of the game, Guerrilla is kicking off a Double XP event starting at 9am Friday morning, Pacific time (5pm GMT, 4am Saturday in Sydney), and lasting until 2am Pacific Monday night (that’s 9pm in Sydney).

Double XP is a pretty fabulous thing, if you want to rank up through the game quickly. When your free access to the game depends on you holding a low rank, that’s pretty much the opposite of what you want.
