Something not-quite-right with Mortal Kombat Vita

Here we have the new and fantastic trailer for Mortal Kombat for PlayStation Vita. It’s been put together by Warner Bros and Netherrealm Studios, and is sure to get augmented reality all excitable.

…but there’s one thing the video doesn’t make clear: All of that AR stuff, Sub-Zero and Scorpion battling it out on the sidewalk, it’s all staged. The game – while it will take advantage of the Vita’s cutting-edge technology – will not actually feature AR elements. Instead, you get touch-screen fatalities and a collection of minigames (hardly a fair trade, if you ask me).

Not sure quite why the marketing department chose to head in this direction, unless it’s a slightly misinterpreted version of the “play anywhere” concept. In the meantime, if you’d like to check out some augmented reality battles, you may want to pick up a copy of Reality Fighters for Vita. We previewed the game at E3, and it seems to fit that niche quite nicely.
