Part of the fun of the Elder Scrolls series is the ability to mod the living daylights out of it, twisting and moulding the game to be just the way you like it. Ten years after its release, the Morrowind modding community is still alive and kicking, and it looks like Skyrim is shaping up for similar treatment.

The game launched late last year without a Creation Kit, but Bethesda has been working on the situation, with Production Director Ashley Cheng revealing that it’s “nearly here”.
We’re big believers that if we go the extra mile and make our games as moddable as possible, the game will only be better for it. So the gameplay of “do whatever you want” extends to “make the game do whatever you want.” As we were building Skyrim and its tools, we made it a goal to try and keep the transition from our previous titles to Skyrim as smooth as possible for modders. More importantly, we want to make it easier for more people to enjoy mods. So we teamed up with Valve and created the Skyrim Workshop. We couldn’t be more pleased with how it’s turning out. Mods are a big part of what makes our games special, so we urge everyone to try it out. We’re going to keep looking for ways to get mods to more people, and hopefully one day to our console audience.
Available exclusively for PC gamers (for a while at least), the Skyrim Creation Kit will be available under Steam‘s Tools options. Everybody is invited to jump in and try their hand at making their own mods – but if you’re not the creative type, feel free to browse the Skyrim Workshop and sample what other people have worked on.
Through the wonders of technology, you’re also no longer simply downloading and installing a standalone file. Now, you’re subscribing to the mods you like, and the launcher will regularly check back to see if there are any updates. It’ll even grab them for you!
The whole thing is possible with help from Valve, of course, and Cheng explains that both companies are still hard at work on some impressive updates for the future.
No word just yet on release dates, but stay tuned, this one’ll make quite a splash when it finally hits.
