EA has a big 2012 coming up, with two significant role-players due out before March. It makes sense then, that some items from Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning have ended up in Mass Effect 3, and vice versa.
Before you start wondering about assets going walkabout in the EA studios, it seems that this one’s an intentional decision. Both games have demos coming out in the not-too-distant future, and EA doesn’t want you to have to choose just one, so it’s made both irresistable.
Sure, the two worlds aren’t particularly cohesive, but BioWare and 38 Studios have worked together, creating Omni-blade “inspired” daggers for the Reckoning demo, and an assault rifle and set of Amalur-themed armour for Mass Effect that’s been designed by award-winning Reckoning artist Todd McFarlane.
It’s actually a pretty sweet deal, as Curt Schilling, Chairman and Founder of 38 Studios explains:
We are thrilled to have the opportunity to deliver this massive one-two punch with Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning and Mass Effect 3. We wanted to provide fans of the Mass Effect franchise with a unique set of rewards for diving into the expansive universe of Reckoning.
We are excited to be collaborating with 38 Studios to bring pieces inspired by the Mass Effect universe into the world of Reckoning and to have items designed by Todd McFarlane in Mass Effect 3. This is an awesome way to reward our fans with unique content that not only looks cool, but also delivers some great in-game benefits.

The Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning console demo is due out next week, on January 17th. Simply downloading and playing your way through that will happily unlock two new items for Mass Effect 3, which you can check out on March 6th when the game launches.
- Reckoner Knight Armor: This armor will maximize damage done in close-quarters combat while a beefed–up power cell feeds energy into weapon systems to increase projectile velocity.
- The Chakram Launcher: This weapon uses a fabricator to manufacture lightweight, explosive ammunition discs. This weapon is earned after completing the Reckoning demo and watching the trailer at the end.
While we’re not sure when the Mass Effect 3 demo will arrive, chances are it’ll be before February 7th, which is when Reckoning hits shelves. Playing your way through outer space will unlock the following items in Amalur:
- N7 Armor: Players can unlock special armor inspired by Commander Shepard’s iconic N7 battle armor including Helm, Cuirass, Gauntlets, Chausses and Greaves.
- Onmiblade Daggers: A holographic blade stemming from Commander Shepard’s Omni-Tool, the Omni-blade allows players to stab enemies in close combat. Once players install and play the Mass Effect 3 demo, they will unlock the daggers.

It’s a pretty smart move on EA‘s part: While everybody knows about Mass Effect 3, Reckoning is slinking along in the background somewhere, not gathering much attention despite looking like a thoroughly awesome game. Looks like this should hopefully raise awareness of the upcoming RPG, and that, my friend, is a pretty great thing. Plus, free stuff! For playing games! Win!
