The big news over the weekend: A release date for Diablo III, thoughtfully revealed by a U.S. retailer who (allegedly) installed a piece of launch promotion a little early.
The artwork included references to a “midnight opening” and a fancy timer, counting down to an excitingly-close, confusingly-misspelled “Feburary 1st” date.
Adding fuel to the conspiracy fire, Best Buy‘s official web store also included a February 1st release date for Diablo III, while a UK retailer backed that all up with a slightly-delayed date of February 3rd.
However. It didn’t take long for the flames to start flickering out. Firstly, the Minnesota store quickly removed all of the artwork, explaining that it wasn’t necessarily at the publisher’s request, but simply that the provided launch date was “not very firm”. The official-looking promotional gear (mis-spellings aside) had been produced by the store, and not sent from Blizzard.
Diablo III does not have a release date. Any store or person claiming otherwise is guessing.
Sigh. As always, Blizzard will officially announce any release dates and other plans via a press release sent to the usual channels – Bashiok explains that stores won’t be given any extra heads-up on this one.
So – stay tuned – as soon as we hear anything about Diablo III (or anything else!), we’ll let you know.
