Rockstar Games obviously didn’t get the memo that I was looking for impressive new mobile games this week, as the company has just announced Grand Theft Auto III will be arriving on an assortment of mobile devices on December 15th.
Yes, that Grand Theft Auto III, which originally launched for PS2 back in October 2001, will be published in its entirety in a format that can fit right in your pocket.
But! If you’ve got an older phone – even one that’s running a recent operating system – you might be out of luck. You’ll need a new-model handset and the latest firmware if you want this one to work. We’re promised that additional device support is coming “later”, but for now, here’s the list of what’s compatible:
- Apple iOS Devices: iPad 1 & 2, iPhone 4 & 4S, iPod touch 4th Generation
- Android Phones: HTC Rezound, LG Optimus 2x, Motorola Atrix 4G, Motorola Droid X2, Motorola Photon 4G, Samsung Galaxy R, T-Mobile G2x
- Android Tablets: Acer Iconia, Asus Eee Pad Transformer, Dell Streak 7, LG Optimus Pad, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1, Sony Tablet S, Toshiba Thrive
So – want it? Grand Theft Auto III is set to hit both the App Store and the Android Marketplace on December 15, for a measly $4.99 (or equivalent).
The game itself translates to the handheld quite well, with Rockstar making a few tweaks to handle the touchscreen controls. Remember this is a game that had a few control-based complaints back in the day, and we’re not sure how the shooting mechanic will convert to on-screen controls.
Still, if you’d been looking for something to play when you have a few moments spare, or you’d been considering your next stroll down Memory Lane, it’s worth looking in the general direction of Grand Theft Auto III.
