A peek at Ron Gilbert's game with Double Fine

“This is an idea that has been in my head for a long long long time,” says Ron Gilbert. Given that he’s been in designing games since 1979 (or thereabouts), he’s not exaggerating.

I’m so excited. It predates Maniac Mansion and Monkey Island. It’s a game that needed to be made.

Gilbert these days is well known as the creator of DeathSpank, but back in the day he was the brains behind some of the most classic and influential games in history, Maniac Mansion and Monkey Island being just two.

Now, he’s working on an all-new (old!) project with old pal Tim Schafer at Double Fine, rekindling a partnership that created games like Day of the Tentacle.

While there’s no guarantee that any new games will be of quite that magnitude (the pair hit some pretty high notes pretty early in their careers), if it’s been percolating in Gilbert’s cranium for this many years, it’s sure to be something special.

No details have been revealed just yet, but we have been given two pieces of concept art for the unnamed game, which looks like Gilbert isn’t straying far from his artistic roots.

Both of those two, we’re told, are playable characters – so we’re a little bit excited ourselves.
