Bethesda welcomes baby Dovahkiin to the world

Earlier this year, Bethesda announced that if a child was born on 11/11/11 and named Dovahkiin in honour of Skyrim, the lucky family would receive a lifetime supply of Bethesda games.

Originally, we thought the company was joking, but a representative assured us they were totally serious. Friday, November 11th came and went, and we didn’t hear anything about any gamer births, so the competition was expected to fade into obscurity.

…until this week. Apparently it took Megan and Eric Kellermeyer a few days to gather up the documents and photographs required to show off their newest addition – Dovahkiin Tom Kellermeyer – born 11/11/11, as a little brother to Kyari.

Dovahkiin Tom Kellermeyer

Dragonborn!

His parents have, predictably, been on the receiving end of a heap of ridicule for choosing the name, but both Mom and Dad remain optimistic that little Dovahkiin won’t be bullied any more than “many kids were, are, and shall be”, explaining that they didn’t “conform for the sake of conformity”.

…if in the end the name is too much, he has the choice of going by the middle name Tom, the name of my husband’s step-father who passed away a mere three weeks before Dovahkiin’s arrival. And when he actually reaches school age, what with people online able to call themselves/name themselves anything they wish, will this really be that big a deal for kids? We don’t believe so but only time will tell. And we will always be there for him.

While the inspiration for the name came from the competition and Bethesda‘s creation, by the end of her 9 month pregnancy, Megan says she was becoming quite fond of the idea regardless – even considering using it if her son arrived on a different day.

Happy birthday, Dovahkiin – Wind guide you, little one.
