Skyrim is officially a rather popular game

‘Tis the season for selling plenty of games, it seems – ZeniMax Media has just let us know that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has enjoyed an “enthusiastic reception” following its anticipated 11/11/11 release.

That’s a bit of an understatement – of the seven million launch units shipped around the globe, more than 50% were sold within the first 48 hours, with Bethesda already swamped by large re-orders from North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

Fortunately, people are also playing the game, rather than just buying copies: Within the first 24 hours of release, Skyrim set a new Steam record, with more than 280,000 concurrent players.

Robert Altman, Chairman and CEO of ZeniMax Media (Bethesda‘s parent company) is happy:

We are grateful for the fans’ response to Skyrim. Todd Howard and his team at Bethesda Game Studios have crafted a very special game. Anticipation for Skyrim has surpassed any game in our company’s history, and we are pleased that sales and reviews have reflected the quality and hours of amazing gameplay it provides.

You can check out the playerattack review of Skyrim to see what we thought about it – and while we don’t give scores, the game’s picked up more than 50 perfect scores across the world, seeing the game described as a “masterpiece” and “one of the greatest games ever made”.

Game Director Todd Howard is also a bit chuffed:

Without a doubt, this has been our most ambitious project ever. After over three years of development, we’re finally excited to get it into everyone’s hands.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is out now for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.
