Censorship around the world is a curious business. What’s fine in one country is outright forbidden in another. In addition to relatively obvious changes out of respect for a country’s political past, we’ve also seen games forced to change minor artistic elements such as the colour of the liquid spurting from a severed limb.
Today’s decision falls firmly into the second category, as THQ learns Saints Row the Third needs to be a little less graphic for the Japanese market. It seems that while giant dildo bats are acceptable in most places around the world, Japanese censors have taken objection to the level of detail lavished upon the purple phallus known as the Penetrator.
We’d have thought that people of taste and good breeding would have simply forbidden the three-foot long melee weapon comprised of a sex toy and a baseball bat, but no. The weapon itself is fine. What it does is fine. How it looks is a problem.
The developers have been advised to remove the veins from the weapon, and to reduce the physics to, um, stop it from flopping about the place.
At this stage, there have been no images released of the edited Penetrator, so we’ll have to make do with this original model instead. I think I can see what all the fuss is about.
Saints Row the Third launches November 17th in Japan, two days after the rest of the world.
