XCOM won't arrive until mid-2012 at the earliest

Gamers around the world were disappointed when 2K Games announced that its reboot of classic strategy X-Com would be a tactical shooter affair – and now it’s upsetting even more potential fans with the news that the new XCOM has been pushed back to a potential 2013 release date.

In today’s Take Two earnings call, XCOM was officially delayed into “fiscal year 2013” – which means some time between April 1 2011 and March 31 2013. It was originally scheduled for a March 2012 launch, so cross your fingers that it’s only a brief postponement, but the lack of details suggests we’ll likely be waiting a while for this one.

The news comes amid rumours of layoffs at 2K‘s Australian studios, which was handling most of the development of the game. It’s not yet known how those job cuts will affect XCOM, if at all.

On the bright side, it does now mean that March next year has opened up a little in terms of releases. The move will give Max Payne 3 a bit more space, presuming that he can meet this new deadline after years of delays.
