Gears of War franchise tips $1bn in lifetime sales

…and hot on the heels of our Gears of War 3 review, which hinted at the possibility the title will be popping up on Game of the Year lists all over the world, we now have some sales figures that show Josh isn’t the only person who feels that way.

It’s official: Gears of War 3 enjoyed more than 22,000 midnight launches across the globe, and – in the first week after launch, has now sold more than three million copies.

Yep, 3,000,000 is the magic number, throwing Marcus, Dom and friends into the record books as biggest game of 2011. It’s also grossed more than any other 2011 video game to date, which is no small achievement.

Just in case you thought it was a one-off, these statistics also mean that the entire Gears of War franchise has just tipped one billion U.S. dollars in lifetime sales – the first ever Xbox 360 exclusive to reach that achievement.

Not bad, Epic Games. Not bad at all.
