Max Payne to arrive – finally – in March 2012

After years of teasing, Rockstar Games has announced a date for Max Payne 3. You can expect to hang out with the former New York City cop in March 2012.

Now, it has to be said – we’ve been down this road before. For a while, we were anticipating Max’s glorious return in Winter 2009, before the usual “unforeseen circumstances” got in the way and delayed everything by more than a little bit. But now it seems Rockstar is back on track, and Max is grumpier than ever.

Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games explains:

Max Payne 3 gave us an amazing creative opportunity to evolve one of our most iconic characters. We’re excited to show fans a modern version of Max that pulls them back into his dark and twisted story.

Dark and twisted indeed. Former detective Max is “still haunted” by his traumatic past (hint: that’d include the events of the first two games), and has packed everything up to head to Sao Paulo, Brazil. He’s got himself a job there doing private security, looking after a wealthy industrialist and his family.

Sounds pretty idyllic, so of course something goes wrong. Gangs begin to target the family Max has been assigned to look after, so Mr. Crankypants finds himself forced to save his clients and clear his name. Will he finally be able to rid himself of his demons?

The first in the series to be developed by someone other than series creator Remedy Entertainment, this is also the first in the series to introduce multiplayer alongside the expansive singleplayer campaign. Expect to be able to alter maps and mode progression for all players in a map – plus persistent clans, multiple load-out options and a “deep” reward and leveling system.

Rockstar describes the game as a “true cross-studio collaboration” between the studio’s assorted global development teams, utilising the latest in Natural Motion physics and showing off the latest iteration of the Rockstar Advanced Game Engine.

In case you hadn’t figured it out yet, Max Payne 3 aims to be a return to form, a “dark, gritty action experience”, designed both for fans of the franchise and also newcomers who haven’t yet been introduced to the unique (and crabby) Max.
