The War of the Worlds releases new dev diary

The War of the Worlds was one of the brightest highlights from E3, but in the nearly three months since the expo, we haven’t really heard too much more about the project.

But while we were waiting for the rain, there was a storm a-brewin. We’ve now gone from virtually no news to an overload, with a brand new website at waroftheworldsgame.com and an awesome, insightful dev diary video the guys at Other Ocean are just dying to show off.

So – what’s new with The War of the Worlds? Firstly – a new date. We originally heard the game was headed for a September 2011 release, but as time’s gone by, that’s been pushed back for something closer to October (or the ominous “late 2011”, depending on where you look). Given the game’s ambition, design and passion, the disappointment at the delay is somewhat tempered by the fact that this can only mean the game is going to benefit from an extra few weeks’ polish.

In case you’d forgotten, The War of the Worlds is a pretty classy new interpretation of the classic H.G. Wells sci-fi novel. Rather than taking a Spielberg / Tom Cruise approach, making the game full of fireworks, explosions and guns, indie developer Other Ocean is looking further back into the archives, drawing inspiration from the 1953 film adaptation and creating a single-player side-scrolling action-adventure hybrid.

Narrated by Patrick Stewart, written by Chris Fowler and with music provided by Chris Huelsbeck, the gameplay pays homage to Flashback, Out of this World and Prince of Persia.

Follow the exploits of an “unknown everyman” as he struggles to escape – and survive – the Martian invasion of London.
