Counter-Strike returns with Global Offensive

It’s no Half-Life 3, but Valve has just announced its brand-new game, and it’s one that old-school fans are going to love. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is due out in 2012, and promises to expand upon everything that was so great about the original Counter-Strike.

Doug Lombardi, Vice President of Marketing at Valve is a bit excited:

Counter-Strike took the gaming industry by surprise when the unlikely MOD became the most played online PC action game in the world almost immediately after its release in August 1999.

For the past 12 years, it has continued to be one of the most-played games in the world, headline competitive gaming tournaments and selling over 25 million units worldwide across the franchise. CS: GO promises to expand on CS’ award-winning gameplay and deliver it to gamers on the PC as well as the next gen consoles and the Mac.

What’s he talking about? Global Offensive features new maps, new weapons, and new characters. Classic CS content, revamped and updated for today’s audience. There’s also a bunch of new gameplay modes thrown in, and the new standard features of matchmaking and leader boards.

CS:GO is currently in development at Valve and Hidden Path Entertainment (also based in Seattle). The team is “targeting” a release via Steam (of course) for both PC and Mac, as well as PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade.

Want to check it out earlier? Get yourself to PAX Prime or this year’s Eurogamer Expo.

The game’s even got its own page on Steam already (no pre-purchase links just yet, though!), check it out!
