Doom 3 source code released "this year" says id

id Software is well-known for groundbreaking developments when it comes to video games. The release of DOOM back in the mid-90s changed the face of gaming forever, and John Carmack and his team haven’t really slowed down in the decades which followed.

Now, as part of his keynote at QuakeCon 2011, Carmack has revealed that – just like he promised back in 2009 – id will release the DOOM 3 source code to the public, “some time this year”.

Last year, we saw the source codes for both Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory and Return to Castle Wolfenstein released, and it’s great to see id continuing down this path.

Carmack himself says that the release of this old-school code benefits id itself, but it’s also a great thing for the development community (including modders, of course!). In addition, Carmack’s throwing down the gauntlet, labelling the release a “challenge” to other game developers to follow suit. Who knows if anyone will take him up – and what we might see in the future!
