Back in May, we learned about young leukaemia patient Owain Weinert, and how he – with a little help from Make-A-Wish – had been working with PopCap Games to create his masterpiece – Allied Star Police.
Now known as the third game under the publisher’s “experimental” label, 4th & Battery, Allied Star Police has been released onto the App Store, all ready for you to grab it for iPad, iPhone or iPad touch – and did we mention it’s free?
The game itself is pretty solid – a side-scrolling top-down arcade release, combining RTS elements with bits of tower defence. There’s a good vs. evil story running throughout, and 9yr old Owain has created a fictional, futuristic world for everyone to live in.
So far, it seems the game’s a success, as Owain reports:
I have to say, my brother can’t stop playing it, my dad can’t stop playing it, and neither can I.
This started off as a dream of mine, and now my friends and people all over the world can play my creation.
There are Tanks, Hovercraft Supervehicles, and a mysterious GSLC on hand to defeat the evil purple Flamions, equipped with Mechazoids and Commandoids. Take ’em on in three levels of difficulty – Newbie, Veteran or INSANIFIED – and three different locations (Earth, Mars and evil’s home base Flamiar).

Matthew Lee Johnston is Senior Producer at 4th & Battery, and he reveals:
Owain was literally like every other designer and developer I’ve worked with.
The minute he walked in the door he handed us a fully realized game design, figured out to the last detail. He stuck with that vision, and directed the team through the development process like a pro. When he first sat down to play it, he naturally knew what to do and won his first round easily, which felt to us like we did a good job executing on his plan.
The game itself was created as part of “PopCamp”, an opportunity for in-house developers to work on whatever projects they want. Owain visited the PopCap studio once a week, working closely with the team to make his app a reality.

…and is it any surprise that the 9yr old boy from Seattle is currently the reigning champion at Allied Star Police?
