5 Nintendo reveals new console: Wii U

The jokes about what the Wii successor might be called can stop now. It’s time for the jokes about what the Wii successor is called. Welcome to the WIi U.

Reggie Fils-Aime explained that people might remember how the original Wii branding stated making “perfect sense”, when gamers realised that it was referring to “we”, a sort of brotherhood of gamers, of sorts.

Nintendo Wii U

Nintendo's new handlheld.

Now, a few years ater, the company has sat down and created a new brotherhood – observing that gamers want contradictions the whole time. They want something comfortable, but also something new and innovative.

Fils-Aime explains:

Yes, the game will probably still be right for all of us – but could it also be a perfect fit, just for you?

So it’s official. Nintendo’s new console is not the Wii 2. Instead, it’s the Wii “You”.

Reggie calls it:

…even U-topian

And despite the name being something that’ll take some getting used to, the console itself looks kinda awesome. As rumoured, it boasts a touch screen – in fact, the controller is essentially a tablet, with buttons.

We’re going to keep an eye out for the new video we were shown, which illustrates exactly what’s in store mid-2012, but for now, let’s just say that with the camera and the touch screen, this one might give Apple a run for its money.
