The Sims 3 gets Kinected with Pets

I’m not sure what I’m more excited about. The fact that The Sims 3 is coming to Kinect, or the fact that pets are coming to The Sims 3.

In a brand new announcement, EA Play has taken the wraps off of its newest creation – The Sims 3 Pets – an entirely new, standalone game for Xbox 360, PS3 and DS, and an expansion pack for The Sims 3 for both Mac and PC.

Will you play as a builder who creates the ultimate sanctuary for her pets? The detective who – with his trusty hound – solves all of the town’s mysteries? What about the crazy cat lady?

Scott Evans, General Manager of The Sims Studio explains:

“The Sims 3 Pets marks the biggest undertaking in our franchise‚Äôs history, melding the best of The Sims 3 with an even deeper player experience with the addition of pets.

For the first time ever, players will be able to play as their pets and see life through their eyes.”

In a pun-tastic statement, we’re told that “players take creativity by the reins” in The Sims 3 Pets (see what they did there? You can play with horses!), as you explore the stories that you want to tell. Maybe the single guy’s bought himself a dog so that he can hang out at the park and pick up women? Maybe the one thing missing from the criminal overlord’s mansion is her white fluffy cat?

…did we mention, you can create, customise and control more than 100 different kinds of cats and dogs, too? You can even breed them (if you’re into that sort of thing), meaning that you can create new and exciting breeds – as well as ridiculous-looking mutts. (Remember: Pig and elephant DNA just don’t mix… and we’re guessing you can’t cross a dog with a cat or a horse, either.)

Most excitingly though, the Xbox 360 version of the game lets you take control of your pets – and your Sims – simply through voice commands, thanks to Kinect. Get assertive! Tell your Sim to take out the garbage! Tell him to feed the dog! Tell him to WooHoo!

The PC version of The Sims 3 Pets also introduces horses into the game – giving you the opportunity not only to create and customise your creatures, but also to play as them. Horses can be used as transportation, but you can also train them to race or jump hurdles.

So excitement! Starting today, you’ll even be able to pre-order The Sims 3 Pets (at selected retailers), to pick up the Limited Edition, which comes complete with exclusives. Xbox 360 and PS3 gamers will get tiger retriever and panda chow dogs, and a skunk birman cat, as well as “other additional pets”.

PC gamers, on the other hand, get an exclusive pet store, useful for meeting neighbourhood Sims and checking out new, shiny, unique objects.

What’ll it be? Will you create the newest designer breed, or get up to mischief with your puppy? We don’t have a release date for this one just yet, but if we wish for The Sims 3 Pets hard enough, it’ll come sooner. Right?
