EA acquires Aussie mobile developer Firemint

Wow. Australian developers Firemint, creators of smash hit iOS games Flight Control and Real Racing has just confirmed the company’s aquisition by Electronic Arts.

Flight Control

Congratulations indeed!

Based in Melbourne, the 60-person team at Firemint will bring a “proven powerhouse” of creative talent to EA Interactive (EAi). The deal is “not material” to EA overall, and – while financial details are not disclosed, the deal is expected to close within a month.

Barry Cottle, Executive Vice President and General Manger of EA Interactive explains:

“The Firemint team is remarkable for its critical and commercial success.

“Having them as part of EAi will accelerate our position as worldwide leader in game development for mobile devices and online gaming platforms.”

EA also recently acquired Mobile Post Production Inc, one of the world’s leading companies when it comes to cross-platform development and porting games to smartphones.

Cottle seems to think this is a winning combination:

“The added technical expertise of MPP, combined with the creative talent of Firemint and our EAi studio teams, fuels EA’s leadership in delivering top selling, high quality games across mobile phones and smartphones, tablets and future digital interactive entertainment platforms.”

It’s a double-whammy for EA, as Firemint acquired fellow Aussie developers Infinite Interactive (creators of Puzzle Quest late last year. Not a bad deal!
