We’ve seen recently what PopCap Games can get up to when they get bored – Unpleasant Horse is the result of a Game Jam organised by the company. This week, we’ve found out what the company is capable of when it uses its powers for good – working with young leukemia patient Owain Weinert.
Owain’s mother explains that life is difficult for children with cancer, as well as their parents and siblings:
“To have something like this, to refocus your energy and bring you up and make you feel great and have all the attention focussed on Owain, has been really valuable. It’s been really great to be able to get up in the morning and say ‘Oh! Today we’re going to PopCap!’ – we’ve been really thrilled.”
And that’s just what happened. Owain was invited to the PopCap studios over a number of weeks, where he explained to the team exactly what he wanted to be included in his real-time strategy game. Essentially, you play as a base commander, deploying “automated battle machines” and “targeted ballistic ordnances” as you fend off the dreaded Flamions.
“The game is actually really fun!
I really had fun watching it take shape, it started out as one kid’s random dream, and now, people all over the country – and maybe in other countries – will get to play this game on their iPads, iPhones and iPod touches.”
