For a little while last year, I spent a lot of time playing a little Facebook game called Ravenwood Fair. That was John Romero’s first outing into casual games-land. Yes, that John Romero, the guy who created Doom and Daikatana, the first-person-shooter legend. He’s now turned his hand towards that other ridiculously successful genre, and, from all accounts, is doing quite well for himself.
His new one is Cloudforest Expedition, designed to hit Facebook in the next six months or so.
Romero is Lead Designer on the game, which is actually a collaboration between his new company, Loot Drop, and established social gamers RockYou, which is providing the funding and publishing for Cloudforest.
If you’ve ever wanted to “become the next great explorer” by spending hours on a social networking site, this one might be for you. It’s an adventure/exploration title (aren’t they all?), with gameplay focussing on clearing areas and making discoveries.
Apparently the deal – which was inked in January – has been pretty sweet for both parties, as Romero explains:
“They support our creative freedom as we bring innovation to the story-driven adventure genre with Cloudforest Expedition.
“Extending the relationship with a second game makes sense, and we’re excited to reveal more details of our projects.”
…and yes, you read right. Before the first one has even hit the virtual shelves, RockYou and Loot Drop have confirmed a second Romero-penned game will be following. Y’know, just in case you needed more things to do instead of work.
