Shadows of the Damned to feature The Damned

Wow. Suda51 has just announced one of the more awesome music/gaming tie-ins that we’ve seen in a long time: Legendary punk band The Damned will be featured on the soundtrack to Shadows of the Damned, creating the game’s title track. How appropriate!

…the song is the perfect blend of video game soundtrack and trademark dark energy that only these two powerhouses of their respective industries could concoct.

To make this whole deal even sweeter, this “collaboration from Hell” was written by brilliant video game composer Akira Yamaoka, who appears on guitar and bass alongside members of the British band.

The Damned... in Shadows of The Damned

It’s the first time The Damned have performed a song for a video game, and the story is pretty sweet: CybergothX, a member of the Damned message board mentioned the in-development game to drummer Pinch, who obviously liked the concept enough to “set the wheels in motion” for the collaboration. The song was recorded on three different continents simultaneously, and the game’s sound director flew from Japan to the UK just to record with Dave Vanian.

In case you’re unfamiliar with The Damned, they are music industry heroes. They took the world by storm as the first outfit to release a punk single (1977’s New Rose), followed soon after by the world’s first punk album (Damned Damned Damned).

The Damned were the first punk band to hit the UK music charts, and the first to tour the United States, paving the way for other acts, like the Sex Pistols, The Clash and The Ramones.

With founding members Dave Vanian on vocals and Captain Sensible on guitar and keys, and relative newcomer Pinch on drums, lyrics and backing vocals, the band is celebrating its 35th anniversary. The London lads are still creating their own unique brand of music, taking elements from various rock genres, punk, psychedelia, theatre and even cabaret.

Considered one of the forefathers of gothic punk, there’s no way that this joint project with Grasshopper Manufacture can be anything but awesome.

Get ready to smash it up with Shadows of the Damned in June, for PS3 and Xbox 360. We’re also hearing rumours that the collaboration may also work together on a live performance, too. Keep your eyes peeled!
